Synopsis
France and England were the crucible for the formation of new architectural styles in the 18th and 19th centuries. First came neo-classicism. Then later there followed styles ranging from the neo-renaissance to the neo-gothic. In volume 1, which concentrates on the history of architecture in France and England during the 18th century, the rationalist tradition in France is linked to the speculations of cartesian philosophy, and the picturesque tradition in England to empiricism.
