Field Work - Hardcover

9780571114306: Field Work

Synopsis

(Field Work, which first appeared in 1979, is a superb collection of lyrics and narrative poems from one of the literary masters of our time. Field Work is the record of four years during which Seamus Heaney left the violence of Belfast to settle in a country cottage with his family in Glanmore, County Wicklow. Heeding an early warning system to get back inside my own head, Heaney wrote poems with a new strength and maturity, moving from the political concerns of his landmark volume North to a more personal, contemplative approach to the world and to his own writing. As the critic Dennis Donoghue wrote in The New York Times Book Review: In 1938, not a moment too soon, W. B. Yeats admonished his colleagues: 'Irish poets, learn your trade.' Seamus Heaney, born the following year, has learned his trade so well that it is now a second nature wonderfully responsive to his first. And the proof is in Field Work, a superb book . . . [This is] a perennial poetry offered at a time when many of us have despaired of seeing such a thing. In Field Work he brings a meditative music to bear upon fundamental themes of person and place, the mutuality of ourselves and the world Heaney is keyed and pitched unlike any significant poet now at work in the language, anywhere. Harold Bloom, The Times Literary Supplement For all the qualities I list, the most important is song [and] the tune Heaney sings [is] poetry's tune, resolutions of cherished language. Donald Hall, The Nation. Seamus Heaney received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1995. His recent translations include Beowulf and Diary of One Who Vanished; his recent poetry collections include Opened Ground and Electric Light)

Book Description

Field Work by Seamus Heaney is further affirmation of the Nobel Prize-winning Irish poet's pre-eminence in both the depth and immediacy that poetry is able to offer: 'I ate the day / Deliberately, that its tang / Might quicken me all into verb, pure verb.'

Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. First Edition. First impression of the true first edition, published in 1979 - the scarcer hardcover issue. There was also a simultaneously published wrappers issue which is more common. ***Near fine in brown cloth-covered boards, with gilt titles to the spine. The gilt is still beautifully bright. The boards are clean and unmarked. No bumps or creases. Corners sharp. No reading lean to the binding. Spine tight. Internally also near fine, with no creases or tears. No inscriptions. Pages clean. ***In a very good dustwrapper, which has not been price-clipped, retaining the original publisher's printed price of £3.00 net. The dustwrapper is virtually without faults, except for the commonly found fading to the spine area and top edge of the front panel. No chips. No tears. No creasing. Flaps not creased. ***224mm x 145mm. 64 pages. ***'"Field Work" was Heaney's first collection of poetry since his most celebrated collection, "North" in 1975. Field Work can largely be read as a record of Heaney's four years (1972-1976) living in rural County Wicklow in the Republic of Ireland, after leaving the violence of The Troubles. Heaney had previously been living in Belfast as a professor at Queen's University. Denis O'Donoghue has referred to this period as "years of retreat only in the religious or monastic sense, a quiet time for thinking and renewal."' (Wiki) ***'At the centre of this new collection, which includes groups of elegies and love poems, there is a short sonnet sequence which concentrates themes apparent elsewhere in the book; the individual's responsibility for his own choices, the artist's commitment to his vocation, the vulnerability of all in the face of circumstance and death. Mr Heaney's voice has matured to a point where he speaks directly and memorably, and is at ease within his chosen modes.' (Quote taken from the front flap of the dustwrapper) ***A true first impression of "Field Work", Seamus Heaney's fifth poetry collection, in bright, near fine condition. Of interest to collectors of Seamus Heaney's poetry. A nice collectable copy. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc. Seller Inventory # 8152x
