Gutes Exemplar; Umschlag mit minimalen Läsuren; Einband stw. minimal berieben. - Englisch. - In the past decade there has been a remarkable upsurge of interest in good handwriting and its more formal cousin, calligraphy, and in their origins. With the invention of printing in the fifteenth century, the writing-master came into his own: for the first time he was able to broadcast his models and instructions to the world in 'writing books' - which have been much admired for their beauty. Many have survived, the most important being written in Latin, Italian or Spanish, but few have been adequately translated. Scribes and Sources has fulfilled a long-standing need by providing translations of all the basic texts in a single volume with a detailed biographical and technical commentary. It is the first large-scale and systematic collection of its kind. The scene is set with descriptions of the social forces that led in the sixteenth century to the demand for trained secretaries to man the swelling bureaucracy in the chanceries and courts of Europe. After two dialogues on handwriting as seen through the eyes of the educationalists, Erasmus and Vives, the book is then devoted entirely to the writing-masters themselves and the way they taught the italic hand. The instructions of Tagliente, Vicentino (Arrighi), Palatino, Mercator, Hondius and Brun are given in full; there are substantial excerpts from Fanti, Cresci, Augustino da Siena, Yciar, Lucas, Madariaga and Juan de la Cuesta; and Pierre Hamon, Jacques de la Rue, Caspar Neff and Clement Perret are also discussed. A chapter by Berthold Wolpe on John de Beauchesne, author of the first English writing-book, and a full translation of the acrimonious debate between Cresci and Scalzini complete this absorbing book.
