A study of Syriac Christianity up to the early fifth century CE: its beliefs and worship; its life and art. In this classic work, Robert Murray offers the fullest and most vivid picture yet available of the development and character of the culture, illustrating both its original close relationship to Judaism and its remoter background in Mesopotamian civilization. He is interested too in the subsequent influence of Syriac Christian culture, particularly on European literature. This book deals with a topic of interdisciplinary importance, at the cultural crossroads of the ancient and medieval worlds of east and west, and of Christianity, Judaism and Islam. It will be of interest to a correspondingly wide range of scholars and students. No knowledge of Syriac is assumed.

From the reader's report: There is no study like Murray's book, nor is there a peer for its survey of early Syriac literature. The republication if this book was prompted by the need for extensive revisions to the original introduction. This is the primary change the author has undertaken. To his credit, the revisions are mandated by the extraordinary advancements in scholarship witnessed in the past 25-30 years, since the original publication of the book in 1975, prompted in part by the impact of this book when it first appeared. Syriac studies in particular, but early Christianity more broadly, have undergone massive changes as new types of information have become available, and new methods of assessing data have become standard. Murray's revised introduction is a tour-de-force presentation of the past thirty years of scholarship relevant to early Syriac Christianity. It is a magisterial piece in its own right.
Dr Robert P. R. Murray SJ was Lecturer at Heythrop College, University of London, until his retirement.
