Karl Barth Having studied theology at the universities of Bern, Berlin, Tubingen and Marburg from 1904 to 1909, Karl Barth held professorships successively at Gottingen and Munster universities from 1923 to 1930, when he was appointed Professor of Systematic Theology at the University of Bonn. Before his expulsion from Bonn in 1934, he engaged in controversy with Adolf von Harnack, opposed the Hitler regime in Germany, and supported church-sponsored movements against National Socialism. From 1935 until his retirement in 1962 he was professor at Basel. During this period he worked on his Church Dogmatics (1932-68), which stands out as the crown of his achievement and was unfinished at his death in December 1968.
