Synopsis

The Sloane Herbarium lies at the core of the Natural History Museum's globally important collection of more than five and a quarter million plant specimens. Assembled over a 70-year period beginning in the late 17th century it is, for its time, without parallel in terms of its size, breadth and geographical scope. This colossal endeavour was orchestrated by the physician and naturalist Sir Hans Sloane and involved at least 300 contributors from across the globe, from his fellow great collectors and cataloguers to surgeons, traders and gardeners.

The Collectors reveals the lives and motivations of the people who contributed to this incredible global enterprise.
