Okay, let me guess. You’re either reading this book because you really want to tackle some DIY projects and just need a bit of motivation, or you’re reading this book because everyone else wants you to tackle some DIY projects and you just need a bit of peace and quiet. Either way, you’re in safe hands. For the cool tool enthusiast there’s a load of great projects to get started on straightaway, but for those of you who need a bit more time ‘building up to speed’ there’s a good few pages of dead simple and dead useful information to browse through first.

Now if you’re a confirmed DIYphobic, you probably think this ’homebuilt’ nonsense is all far more trouble than it’s worth (you’d rather just call a spade a spade, a screwdriver a cocktail drink and let that be and end to it). Well, you’d be wrong to do that and I hope this book might actually prove to be the beginning of that realisation. Not only is a spot of DIY far easier and far more fun than you’d imagine, it’s also the only affordable way you can actually end up with exactly what you want, as opposed to the nearest equivalent from the local superstore. Best of all, there’s no substitute for that great feeling you get when you stand back to admire a finished piece of work and say, ‘Yeah, I did that.’ At the end of the day, all DIY building projects can be divided into three basic stages, which I call the three ‘Fs’. The first is ‘Fabricating; when you’ve got to make the bits; the second is’ Fixing’, when you stick them together; and the final one is ‘Finishing’, when you make the whole thing look decent.
