Synopsis
It was a dark and stormy night; the rain fell in torrents except at occasional intervals when it was checked by a violent gust of wind which swept up the streets (for it is in London that our scene lies) rattling along the house-tops and fiercely agitating the scanty flame of the lamps that struggled against the darkness.

Edward Bulwer-Lytton (25 May, 1803-18 January, 1873), was an English novelist, poet, playwright, and politician. Lord Lytton was a florid, popular writer of his day, who coined such phrases as "the great unwashed", "the pen is mightier than the sword", and the infamous incipit "It was a dark and stormy night."
