From the Back Cover

In Her Way Dame Catherine Cookson sings and reflects on the songs that evoke her most poignant and vivid memories. At the age of thirteen Catherine Cookson was told that she couldn't sing. From then on she suppressed a talent that only came to light when she was eighty.

Hearing My Way for the first time, she knew how much she would dearly love to sing that song - it exactly expressed her life.

Overcoming years of anxiety about her voice, she endeavoured to sing as expressively as she talked. 'I can and I will', had always been her motto, and by letting the lyrics flow from her heart she found her voice only for her illness to become so severe that this new talent had to be put aside and forgotten for ten years.

Included on this audio tape are moving renditions of such classics as My Way and Danny Boy together with Catherine Cookson's own original composition, Falling Leaves. These were first recorded on tape without any backing and discovered by her husband in 1989. Interspersed with these songs are personal stories from her past, imbued with characteristic down-to-earth common sense and told in her uncompromisingly honest style. These she did not record until her ninetieth year.

Available on audio cassette for the first time, and a must for all readers familiar with her work, Her Way gives us a deep insight into Catherine Cookson's hard-won philosophy of life.

About the Author

Catherine Cookson was born in Tyne Dock, the illegitimate daughter of a poverty-stricken woman, Kate, whom she believed to be her older sister. She began work in service but eventually moved south to Hastings, where she met and married Tom Cookson, a local grammar-school master. Although she was originally acclaimed as a regional writer - her novel The Round Tower won the Winifred Holtby Award for the best regional novel of 1968 - her readership quickly spread throughout the world, and her many best-selling novels established her as one of the most popular of contemporary women novelists. After receiving an OBE in 1985, Catherine Cookson was created a Dame of the British Empire in 1993. She was appointed an Honorary Fellow of St Hilda's College, Oxford, in 1997. For many years she lived near Newcastle upon Tyne. She died shortly before her ninety-second birthday, in June 1998.
