From the Back Cover

It is now over thirty years since the present wave of conflict in Northern Ireland began and since the birth of the Provisional IRA. In spite of the huge loss of life and the very considerable political upheaval it has caused, very little is known about the organization.

The Provisional IRA is the first full-length study to be undertaken since the Troubles began in 1969 and it is an authoritative examination of the objectives, structure and leaders of the IRA. It draws on long and unusually frank interviews with IRA activists and is an invaluable and fascinating account.
