This is about the bond between a hound pack and their owners
This book deals with a Lakeland village in the 1950s, when men hunted with their hounds on foot. This is village life, with the pack forming a bond, as each man owns his own hound. There is Jasper, who they consider too old to be part of it, but when two of the hounds get into trouble, trapped down a badger run, it is Jasper who comes to the rescue with his dog. The vixen who forms the main part of the story, is so wily and cunning that she passes on her lore to her offspring. The hunt is led a merry dance during the season. Much of this comes from staying in an inn in the Lakes where the men met after the hunt and I listened to their conversations. Also my own wildlife observations from hides in remote parts of Scotland, Ireland and Wales as well as England, and from my childhood, when animals and birds were far more plentiful than now...I rarely went out on a country walk without seeing foxes and hares. It was a bestseller in the UK and the USA and was reviewed by the Sunday Express as 'a novel with a most curious magic.'
