I am the Editor rather than the Author of this work. If you already know the writings of John Henry Newman (1801-90), you won't need any recommendation from me. These Lectures were Newman's response to the outbreak of anti-catholic agitation which greeted the re-establishment of the Catholic Hierarchy in England in 1850. They are a brilliant analysis and satire of anti-catholic attitudes and are certainly the most humorous of Newman's writings. Yet they have never received the attention they deserve. Here at last is a critical edition, with a lengthy Introduction giving the historical background, an analysis of the Lectures' satire and a review of their critical reception. The Editor's Notes help the reader to understand Newman's references and contemporary parallels, and a Textual Appendix gives all the variant readings between the first and last editions. If you already know Newman, this edition should give you a new appreciation of Newman's satire. And if you've never read any of his works, this is the ideal one to start on.
