Synopsis
This text emphasizes that statistics is the study of making sense of data. It approaches the subject by considering four steps in making sense of data: gathering methods, methods for summarizing data, methods for analyzing data, and ways to report the results of analyses. Focus is on the inferences that are made once calculations are done, rather than over-emphasizing teaching statistical calculations. Further chapters have been added to the fifth edition on methods for gathering data and reporting the results of statistical analyses. Further discussions and sections are added to other chapters.
