Review

"The writing style is excellent . . . The informal style is a definite plus . . . The exercises are good. They don't seem to be aimed at doing 'stuff' but more at understanding."

Synopsis

This approach to survey sampling should be equally effective for the student who is learning the subject and for the practitioner as a reference. The author focuses on using sampling techniques and ideas to solve real problems. She gives the reader guidance on how to tell when a sample is valid or not, and how to design and analyze many different forms of sample surveys. Chapters 1-6 cover the basic sampling designs of simple random sampling, stratification, and cluster sampling with equal and unequal probabilities of selection. Chapters 7-12 discuss issues such as: how to analyze complex surveys such as those administered by the Census Bureau; different approaches to analyzing sample surveys; what to do if there is non-response; and how to perform chi-squared tests and regression analysis using data from complicated surveys.
