In this revision of his best-selling text, Charles Zastrow has added much that is new, including a conceptual framework for generalist practice; up-to-date illustrations of current social problems; a fresh new two-color design (featuring new photos, new illustrations, and new cartoons); and many new topics. These topics include social work values and ethics, diversity, promotion of social and economic justice, populations-at-risk, social work practice with organizations, feminist perspectives on intervention, health care reform, recent welfare reform proposals, illegal immigration issues, physician-assisted suicide, DSM-IV categories of mental illness, crack babies, anabolic steroids, and much more.

I continue to be amazed at, and impressed with, the volume of the material that Dr. Zastrow addresses and competently presents. Certainly one of the benefits of this text is that students view the impressive range of concerns that social workers address and the variety of roles in which they engage. Another strength... is that it provides content on both theory and practice skills which are finely interwoven with the social problem perspective. the author provides interesting, often realistic case material to illustrate his points.
A textbook designed to stimulate undergraduate students' interest in social work and provide an idea of what working in the field is like. After a historical overview of the field's development, chapters on problems addressed by social services show how people are affected by poverty, drug abuse, physical and mental disabilities, racism, and sexism
