Statistical concepts made easy ... and visual
Developed and course tested to over 3,000 undergraduates per year in courses taught by the statistics department at Texas A&M University, we wrote this interactive multimedia tool to offer an easier, non-mathematical way to help its users to understand statistical concepts. It is designed to be used in conjunction with any elementary statistics textbook. It gives a visual tour of 18 important statistical concepts. Designed to be used with the enclosed software, the book is organized into 28 simple labs that offer immediate visual access to concepts, terminology, and results, while at the same time removing the mathematical barrier to understanding the concepts. The interactive, dialog-box driven environment encourages the user to change parameters, data points, distributions, and ranges to see the effect of "what if" scenarios.
StatConcepts has labs or multiple labs to illustrate the following:
. random sampling
. relative frequency and probability
. distributions of populations
. sampling from 0-1 populations
. bivariate descriptive statistics
. least squares and regression
. the central limit theorem
. Z, t, chi-square, and F critical values
. sampling distributions
. minimum variance unbiased estimations
. calculating confidence intervals
. interpreting confidence intervals
. calculating tests of hypotheses
. tests of significance
. level of significance of a test
. power of a test
. between and within sample variation
. one way ANOVA
. chi-square goodness of fit tests
Although the labs are most effective when used in front of the computer, each chapter in the book includes a guided tour of the that chapter's lab(s) and features plenty of graphs so that basic statistical concepts are clearly communicated simply by reading the tour.
StatConcepts is appropriate for introductory, business, economic, engineering, behavioral, mathematical, and biostatistics, and is totally self-contained. It requires only a computer running Microsoft Windows.
StatConcepts includes the complete data analysis software StataQuest.
