The ecology of tropical forests that grow at high altitudes is described through the eyes of scientists who live and work at the Monteverde Cloud Forest Preserve in Costa Rica.

The story of one of the world's most enchanting ecosystems.
MONTEVERDE is the culmination of two trips I took to Costa Rica in 1994, one in the wet season, the other in the dry season. While in Monteverde, I interviewed dozens of scientists and residents for whom the cloud forest is a major part of their lives. I tell the history of Monteverde and describe the ecology of the forest through these peoples' eyes. The book, which contains more than 50 of my photographs, earned a starred review from Booklist and is currently nominated as a Best Book for Young Adults by the American Library Association. The book, however, is a valuable introduction to this unique, remote place for adults as well as young people and serves as great background for anyone interested in travel, biology, or the environment.
