This is the first systematically organised anthology on responsible conduct in scientific research aimed at students and practising researchers in the biological sciences. It has been designed in response to the increasing concern to teach graduate students about ethical issues in the biological sciences. The book contains classic essays and other published material and is carefully structured to explore a range of subjects: the qualifications for authorship; plagiarism; the use of human beings and animals in research; the norms of ethical conduct in science; scientific honesty and its relationship to gullibility and self-deception; ethical issues in laboratory work; the relation between science and society; the ethics of teaching and learning. The volume also provides insights into issues often not formally considered in graduate science education such as methods of scientific investigation, scientific paradigms and the creative process.

."..a model of organization and content of a graduate course of ethics in the biological sciences. It is highly recommended not only for the personal library of a scientist or scientist-in-training but also for use in a graduate ethics course for the biological scientist." Kenneth Micetich, Doody's "There is a fascinating chapter by William Broad and Nicholas Wade on self-deception and gullibility...Rebecca Dresser provides a compellingly argued piece about the need to include more than white men in research trials...Many important topics are covered." CBE Views ."..the editors have selected high-quality essays, and the discussion questions that follow each section are almost uniformly insightful and provocative." Jon M. Harkness, ISIS "The editors have culled from the literature some very fine articles that are classic and seminal. While many are more than two decades old, they have stood up well against the scrutiny of time and are still germane." Ruth L. Fischbach, Academic Medicine
