Synopsis

Inscriptions from classical Greek lands, written on buildings, pottery or other objects, can provide important information about the ancient world. Mr. Woodhead has written an introduction for the non-specialist which aims to provide all the basic information. He explains the conventional signs used by the epigraphist in transcribing texts; the development of the Greek alphabet and of the various forms of writing; the methods of classifying inscriptions and the main criteria for dating them; the problems of reconstructing, restoring, or rejoining fragmentary texts; and the methods of reproduction by drawing, photography, and the making of paper or latex moulds or 'squeezes'. The final sections introduce the reader to the various published collections of epigraphic texts, and provide some useful background knowledge to help with dating and interpretation. For this second edition, the author has made substantial modifications to the text and brought the bibliographical references up to date.
