This is the definitive one volume history of British Intelligence in WWII. I have several of the individual volumes (5 more volumes), and they supply many of the details that are summarized in this volume. Never underestimate the British. They are pretty clever and have lots of friends. Obviously British Intel was pretty weak in the run up to May 1940 or they wouldn't have lost so badly. By June of 1944, they were running circles around the Germans (and getting the Germans to run in circles). Of course, not everything is covered. If you want any hint of nuclear intel, you have to read something like the "Alsos Mission".

"Anyone who likes a good spy story but has doubts about the value of historians rummaging around in archives should look at the magisterial five-volume official history 'British Intelligence in the Second World War' produced by a team of scholars under the distinguished historian Harry Hinsley. Of particular interest is Michael Howard's slim but brilliant final volume, dealing with strategic deception." New York Times Book Review
