This 1968 book explains what was a new approach to language teaching, and introduces teachers and students to the linguistic and psychological theories which underlie these methods. Language laboratories were becoming commonplace in schools, colleges and universities of the day. Unhappily, however, the teaching techniques used in them seldom realized the full potential of these valuable teaching aids. The author based his approach firmly on the spoken language and describes the transformational generative grammar and scale and category grammar which form the basis of modern methods and goes on to show how these principles can be applied in teaching.
