Before the universe became mostly physics and suspiciously large numbers, it was a beautifully ordered cosmic machine full of spheres, angels, virtues, humours, correspondences, and extremely confident medieval diagrams. The Discarded Image by C. S. Lewis is his elegant introduction to the mental world behind medieval and Renaissance literature. It explains the ?model? of the universe that shaped writers like Dante, Chaucer, Spenser, and Milton: a cosmos that was hierarchical, symbolic, crowded, meaningful, and almost certainly better furnished than ours. Lewis is not asking you to believe the old model. He is asking you to understand it, which is more dangerous. Once you grasp the assumptions behind the writing, the literature stops looking quaint and starts looking like a whole civilisation thinking in a different operating system. There is a lovely irony in the title. The image may be ?discarded,? but Lewis makes it feel oddly desirable: a universe where everything had a place, even if your own place was probably lower than you hoped.
