Hagfishes, ratfishes, sticklebacks and seahorses; flying fish, mudskippers, sharks and stingrays: more species of fish exist than mammals, birds, reptiles and amphibians combined. This is an illustrated introduction to fish biology and behaviour, which describes the evolution and classification of fish, their appearance and structure, the behavioural patterns that allow them to flourish, and the wide variety of habitats in which they live. Information on how to study fish in the wild includes tips on diving and photography. A leading academic conservationist, Moyle gives accounts of how water development and pollution have caused the rapid decline of many species, as well as how certain fish, introduced into a new habitat, can overwhelm the native inhabitants.
