Tom and I originally wrote and self-published "The Complete Guide to Self-Publishing" back in 1979. Then it was titled "The Encyclopedia of Self-Publishing."
We did what we recommend our readers and clients do: make a success of the book, then sell the rights to a major publisher. It was very exciting when we went to Cincinnati in 1983 to negotiate with Writers Digest Books their taking over this title. Little did we know, they had amassed some 30 books on the subject of self-publishing. (We had no idea there were that many back then!) They wanted to choose the very best on the topic ...and decided our book was it. What particularly delighted us was that a trade publisher was finally going to produce a book on self-publishing, thus helping legitimize this method for getting into print.
Since then, the book has been revised and is now in a third edition. In this recent edition we added several things. It now includes 30 ways to generate working capital, information about publishing and marketing into Canada, and details about working with a master (exclusive) distributor. We were most pleased when, on August 19, 1997, a reporter on NPR's Marketplace program declared, "The bible of this self-publishing craze is The Complete Guide to Self-Publishing."
