Synopsis
The need for an archaeological atlas of handy size, with world-wide coverage yet easy to consult, has long been felt by everyone who has an interest in archaeology. now in a single volume are over a hundred specially drawn maps pinpointing more than 5,000 sites and accompanied by explanatory texts. The atlas is divided into seven sections, each prefaced by a commentary on the period or territory covered,and there is a general introduction providing a survey of thee origins and growth of archaeological research, intended to serve as background information to the atlas proper. Superimposed on each map is a standardised grid, by means of which the exact location of every site can immediately be found by consulting the index at the end of the volume. Symbols based on a tabulated key indicate the precise nature of the marked sites.
