Synopsis
Richard Avedon’s photographs of John and Jacqueline Kennedy and their two children combine politics, style, public interest and photographic history to provide a compelling glimpse of two icons of American life. Shannon Perich’s essay, which is accompanied by a wealth of archival photography of both Avedon and the Kennedys, provides background on the two sittings within a political and cultural context, and critically examines the work of one of the finest photographers of the 20th century.

About the Author
Richard Avedon turned fashion photography into an art form during a career that spanned six decades. Shannon Thomas Perich is an associate curator in the Photographic History Collection at the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History. Robert Dallek is the author of An Unfinished Life: John F. Kennedy 1917-1963, among other books.
