Trained as a textile designer, Braun initially used the nascent technology of photography to produce a marvelous and thoughtfully presented herbarium, providing designers and art students with a source book of natural models. Having established his reputation as a top- ranking photographer, he went on to document everything from French landscape and architecture, traditional regional costume, animal breeds and husbandry, to the events and legacies of the Franco-Prussian War. His opulent bouquets of flowers are at once lush, delicate. and richly tonal; his landscapes are breathtaking and immediate; his animal studies arresting; his war photos dramatic and unrelenting. He created thousands of visual souvenirs of pristine Alpine sites and stereoscopic views of popular holiday locations throughout Europe, and would ultimately become one.
