Synopsis

A provocative analysis, this book looks at the economic forces as well as the political and social factors in the world's gross imbalance of wealth. The economist Robin Marris argues that in the 21st century we can and must end poverty. Taking into account questions of population growth and the threat to the environment, he presents a plan of action for the future. The wealthiest fifth of the developed world's population is fifty times richer than the Third World's poorest fifth, but this can be changed with rapid industrial growth in the Third World and development aid, and with proper management of the economy in the developed world.

From the Author

A radical programme to end all poverty
The fundamental cause of poverty in the modern world is the massive economic disparity between the First and Third Worlds. This gap is technically no longer necessary and therefore no longer tolerable. The book contains a scenario for ending all absolute poverty, as Un defdined, throughout the globe by 2050 and ending the entire difference between the two worlds by 2100. The key is economic growth with steady income distribution, fostereed and encouraged by education, progressive culture and effective government. There will be very serious problems with the environment, most especially global warming, but with international political goodwill these ar all probably technically and financial manageable. In its constructive optimisim, the book is radical. It claims that excessive pessimism, as expressed in some aspects of the 'green' ideology, is in danger of becoming a conspiracy against the poor.
