In 1964-65 the 19-year-old Richard Long made his first sculptures out of doors in the gardens and parks of his home town of Bristol. Since then Long has achieved international recognition as one of a handful of artists who have changed the course of modern aesthetics by returning art to life. In the context of landscape art, his contribution is unequalled. A work by him may be a photograph, a map, a textor a sculpture on the ground. This is the first time a book has been published which combines an authoritative critical commentary with a majestic sequence of Long's works, many of them previously unpublished.
