Gilbert and George first presented "The Singing Sculpture" in 1969, then repeated it over the next three years in the UK, Europe, Australia, and for the opening of New York's Sonnabend Gallery in 1971. This period established their international reputation. For the Sonnabend Gallery's 20th anniversary they returned to New York to reprise the original work. 20 years on, "The Singing Sculpture" is as fresh, as moving and as relevant as the day it was conceived. Perhaps the most important of all, its seminal character is now revealed, in that it established the themes that its creators have continued to develop through their preformances and representational art. This book celebrates this recreation through carefully conceived colour plates which record the work's choreography. An introduction by Robert Rosenblum and an essay by Carter Ratcliff, both commissioned for the book, reflect on the performance's original significance, its surprising topicality, its enduring qualities, its relationship to other works by the artists such as their AIDS pictures, and its place amongst the avant-garde strategies of such figures as Joseph Beuys and Jeff Koons.
A section of duotones documents the 1969-71 presentations."About this title" may belong to another edition of this title.
