"Astonishment and wonder are the two main Surrealist tenets. And it is astonishment and wonder that are evoked by the autobiographical collage of Sir Roland Penrose who has been the protagonist of Surrealism in England since the twenties and who - more than any other person - has been at the very centre of major European artistic developments in this century. For many years Penrose, a major Surrealist artist in his own right, knew intimately, among others, Picasso, Braque, Breton, Eluard, Max Ernst, Miro, Man Ray, Bunuel, Henry Moore, Calder, Francis Bacon and virtually every other major European artist most of whom have helped to shape the development of twentieth-century art. As founder and director of the Institute of Contemporary Art in London for more than twenty years, Penrose played a vital role in bringing into close contact British and European art and artists. The exhibitions in which he was involved, from the 1936 International Surrealist Exhibition in London to the 1960 Picasso exhibition at the Tate Gallery, as well as those on Max Ernst, Miro, Tapies, Man Ray, Dada and Surrealism, not to mention several others of major importance at the ICA, were landmarks. Looking back, Penrose has said 'I have had immense luck. Luck in coming from a family that gave me support from the start, and luck in meeting the most incredible people'. His Scrap Book is a unique and fascinating document which will be indispensable to anyone interested in gaining a direct insight into the life and art of this century."
