A lifelong resident of Massachusetts, with occasional stints in New York City, Johnson taught in a schoolhouse himself, wrote, illustrated, photographed, traveled, ran a bookstore and was involved in politics. His writings were centered largely on travel and the countryside, with his first book being The New England Country, published in 1892. Clifton Johnson's extensive collection of school-books, as well as ephemera from his own life, are housed at the Jones Library in Amherst, MA. Rahima Schwenkbeck is a PhD candidate at The George Washington University, researching the intersection of business and utopia.
