Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book analyzes the origins of Renaissance art in France, highlighting the little-known lineage leading up to its widespread influence. The author, an established art historian, reveals that the generally-accepted birth of the Renaissance in the 16th century with Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo is only partially correct. France experienced a century-long evolution prior, with a unique style emerging from the Gothic period spearheaded by Flemish artists. This formative era, which the author terms the 'First Renaissance' and describes as no less impressive than its Italian counterpart, receives its first-ever in-depth examination in this book. The author traces its development through the reigns of successive French kings, revealing the works and artists that characterize this lesser-known period. In addition to expanding our knowledge of the Renaissance, this volume restores France to its rightful place as a major contributor to the movement and sheds new light on the artistic developments that shaped the Western world. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
