Die Darstellung selbst anlangend, weicht diese von den vor handenen gänzlich ab. Dem Verfasser handelte es sich nämlich nicht darum, zu zeigen, wie dieser oder jener europäische Ge lehrte die Lehre des Confucius aufgefaßt und dargestellt hat, viel mehr darum, wie sie vom chinesischen Standpunkte aus, der auch der des Confucius war, darzustellen ist. Aus eben dem selben Grunde ließ er überall nur Confucius selbst sprechen, wo bei die in Betracht kommenden Aussprüche wortgetreu übersetzt mitgeteilt werden. Daraus ergiebt sich der rein philologische Charakter der Arbeit, der dem Verfasser am besten geeignet er schien, wiewohl durch ihn der freie Lauf der Darstellung in nicht geringem Maße gehemmt wird.
