Die Untersuchung der syntaktischen Verhältnisse im Heliand dünkt mir ganz besonders wichtig für die deutsche Grammatik. Denn hier lebt die Sprache nicht unter dem Bann einer ungewohnten metrischen Form wie bei Otfried, und es steht nicht jedes Wort im Verdacht einer Einwirkung des Lateinischen wie bei Isidor, Tatian und Notker. Anderseits ist im Heliand die Entwicklung des Satzbaues weit reicher und mannigfaltiger, als etwa im Beowulf oder in den Edden, die an Selbstständigkeit Nichts zu wunschen liessen.
