Après la grande épidémie qui suivit la découverte de l'amérique, Gaspard Torella, en 1498, décrit des taches syphilitiques, des croûtes remarquables par leur grosseur et leur couleur cendrée; il ajoute que les éruptions sèches et non suppurantes sont très communes et divise les affections syphilitiques de la peau en sèches et en humides.
