Many students, in fact the majority, desire to take up the study of alternating currents with a very inadequate knowledge of mathematics. In view of this fact, which is to be greatly regretted and which constitutes one of the greatest difficulties of students and teachers alike, the calculus has not been used in the body of the book; it has, however, been used in a few foot notes, mainly with the idea of showing students what excellent examples of the use of elementary calculus are furnished by the subject under consideration.
