I man not take'it Upon me to' affirm, that the Perfons fufpe�ted are really guilty 5 on the contrary, for the Sake of them, for the Sake of my Country, I wilh they maybe able to juf'cify themfelves in the moit ample manner, upon a fair and impartial Enquiry: But if they are really guilty, our Con/litution cannot be preferved, His Majefiy's Govern ment c'annot without a firi�t Enquiry, and a sfeoere Puni/bment; and if they are, innocent, their Ch'ara�ters' as Men of Honour, and as good Subje�is,' cannot be vindicated without a fair and an open Eu quiry: In the firfi Cafe, every Man of Ho nour in the Nation ought to promote an Enquiry; in the lafl, the Gentlemen accufed or fufpe�ted, ought to infilt upon it; and therefore, as a Friend to my Country, if they are guilty, as a Friend to them if they are innocent, I refolved to ufe my belt Endea yours to promote a ﬂee and impartial En quiry into that Affair.
