Like all great institutions, the has come out of great tribulation, and has evolved from hard times and difficult circumstances. I am one of those who tried to flourish in the hard times.
In 1870, when I first went up to Oxford, there was not only no amateur society, but there was not even a respectable professional drama at the university. The Vic was the only place of amusement: a low music-hall.
