Excerpt from Early Notices of Toronto
The French settlers in Canada soon had reason to feel alarm at the audacity of the English of the Atlantic seaboard, who were un ceasing in their efforts to draw away the trade from the channel of the St. Lawrence. Their emissaries were everywhere, tampering with the native tribes even in the territories confessedly French. In connexion with proceedings of this kind the name of Toronto comes up in the year 1686.
