Synopsis

Excerpt from Conversations on Education, Vol. 1

Man when born is a brute more than any animal, but he be comes a man by instructions. As these are received, his mind is formed, from which and according to which man is man. Man is in so far a man as he speaks from sound reason and regards his abiding in heaven, and he is in so far not a man as he speaks from perverted reason and regards only his abiding in the world. Still, the latter are men, but not in act but in potency, for every man enjoys the power [potency] of under standing truths and willing good, but in as far as he does not will to do good and understand truths, he can in externals coun terfeit a man and ape him.-t. C. R. 417.
