In revising the text I have admitted a few emendations from Cobet and Classen, and many suggested alterations are discussed in their place but as a rule I have held aloof from the indis criminate 'restoration' which would remove from a Classical work every accretion of harshness or redundancy, and destroys in the process many an original and characteristic feature.
