To burn or to print these pages - that was the ques tion with me when, thinking the time of my departure was at hand, I was setting my affairs in order. Much stuff, such as it was, was consumed, but these pages were spared for reasons that may be guessed at by the discerning. My old friends will be indulgent. If any of them shall conclude that I have ventured once too often as a bookmaker, so be it. I have not been the first, nor will I be the last, to err in this way.
