Onset: of these Corrected means is the mean of five readings at intervals of one hour corrected for temperature and instrumental error.

Peculiarly enough, however, this barometer (no. 349) was reported by the observer to be in bad condition and was returned to this office wholly unserviceable; a condition of affairs that seems scarcely possi ble, except to have been induced by ill treatment after the term of service of the instrument had expired.

In view of these circumstances, therefore, the pressure observations at Furnace Creek can be relied upon as of as great accuracy as any that we can hope to attain with any single instrument of this type.
