'tis true, you long withstood the grim destroyer, So well your dauntless courage oft was hailed; But when he'brought his all to bear upon you, It was too much, your weakened spirit failed. Your glee, alas, had given way to sadness, Dimmed was the youthful luster of your eye; The rosy hue upon your cheeks had vanished, Each weary breath was but a plaintive sigh.
