Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book is a detailed study of the respective roles of the temporal and spiritual powers in the administration of the medieval church. The author first examines the facts of the case, then discusses the rights of temporal and spiritual rulers in church governance. The book is meticulously researched and provides a wealth of concrete examples from both the secular and ecclesiastical realms. Drawing on primary source material such as historical records and decrees from church councils, the author traces the development of the complex relationship between the two authorities from the early Middle Ages through the 14th century. The author concludes that though the line between the jurisdictions of the two powers was often blurred in the medieval period, there was a general recognition that the temporal authority had a legitimate role to play in church administration, especially in matters involving the public order. This book is essential reading for anyone interested in the history of the medieval church and the development of modern ideas about the relationship between church and state.
