It is not much good to talk about things unless we know what we are talking about and yet a great many people who have much to say about 'the Church,' seem to have only the vaguest idea of what they themselves mean by the word. The object of this book is to urge upon all who believe in a Church to consider exactly what they understand by it; to get them to look into the question, and see whether they have any definition of a Church in their own minds, and what that definition is. If they would only do this, I cannot but think that controversies would easily be settled.
