I mull take the Liberty therefore to think, that the Word Selfllnterg/l, in the ill Seule of the Word, ought to be new defin'd, and be made applicable only to thol'e who prefer a fmall Intereﬂ to a great one, or to fuch who take a wrong \vay to attain that great one And in this latter Senfe the Bigot is the molt {elf-intereﬂed Perfon in the World: His whole Thoughts are fo wound up in himfelt', and his own perfonal Views, that he is whol ly regardlefs of what becomes of the rell: of the World, unlefs he can find his own Bene fit in it. Lndeed he will give fome loofe Pence to Beggars, or Vagabonds, and per haps Sums to maintain ldlers and Cynicks, not out of Humanity and generous Principles, hut in order to put it out to large Interefi, I do not mean for Five or Six per Cent. But for more than fixty Times fixty Thoufand; though if a Nation istto be raved, or a great People protefled from Slavery, he is wholly unconcern'd about the Event, as elleeming the little Afl'airs of this \vorld much below his Notice and Confideration.
