Le texte du Renaud de Montauban a été publié pour la pre mière fois par M. Michelant, en 1862, dans la Bibliothèque de l'association littéraire de Stuttgart, d'après le manuscrit 39 du fonds La Valliere (bibliothèque nationale), corrigé d'après di vers manuscrits et complété vers la fin à l'aide du ms. 775 de la Bibliothèque nationale. Il contient plus de dix - sept mille vers. Cette édition, tirée à. Peu d'exemplaires, ne saurait être considérée comme définitive. L'auteur a eu le soin d'emliquer que, dans le choix du texte, il avait été guidé surtout par la pensée de reproduire la version de la célèbre chanson de geste qui s'éloignerait le moins du roman en prose des Quatre Fils Aimon, tel qu'il fut donné jadis dans la Bibliothèque bleue et que nos pères l'ont lu et goûté Dans la seconde partie de l'appendice, il décrit les principaux manuscrits, et c'est là. Qu'en parlant de celui de Montpellier il fait la remarque qu'il est incomplet et s'arrête à l'endroit où Renaud engage un combat singulier avec l'amiral de Perse, épisode dit M. Mi chelant, qui est raconté tout autrement que dans les autres vers1ons.
