Pine Flat Dam, located on the Kings River in Fresno County, California, provides local and regional flood protection for the lower San Joaquin River and contains storage capacity for about 1 million acre-feet of water (see Plate Due to the design and operation of the dam, a portion of the reservoir pool can experience a significant increase in water temperature at certain times of the year. The inability to regulate water temperature in the lake threatens the lake fishery, while releases of warm water from the dam threaten the native coldwater fishery downstream. These adverse effects become even more pronounced in years of low-water storage or periods of long hot, dry weather.
